Ravi Parmar has announced he's resigning from the Sooke School District school board effective 27 Jul 2023.
Parmar ran successfully in the by-election to fill outgoing Langford Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan's seat in the legislature.
He is set to be sworn in as MLA on 28 Jul 2023.
In a tweet, Parmar thanked staff at the school district, his fellow board members, students, and community members.
"As I transition into my new role as the MLA for Langford Juan de Fuca, I carry with me the experiences and memories from School District 62. I am grateful for the opportunities and the relationships built, and I will always hold them close to my heart."
With Parmar on his way out, the school board will quickly get the ball rolling on a by-election.
The board will officially be notified of Parmar's resignation at its next meeting when the secretary treasurer of the board submits his written notice, according to the SD62 spokesperson.
That has to happen within 30 days of 27 Jul 2023.
Within that timeline the school board also has to appoint a chief election officer.
From there the chief election officer has to set a general voting day for the trustee election, which must be on a Saturday no later than 80 days after the date the chief election officer was appointed.
The byelection will be open to candidates in the Belmont zone.
The news marks the end of nearly a decade of Parmar serving on SD62's board.
He was first elected in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.
He has served as chair since 2017.
Parmar also works as the chief of staff in Minister Brenda Bailey's (Jobs, Economic Development, and Innovation) office.
Parmar has worked for a number of ministers within the provincial government, as well as formerly working as a constituency assistant for Horgan.
