Sooke's largest rooftop solar power project has been completed atop Harbourside Cohousing.
The 103 solar panel array spans more than 4,000 square feet and will provide energy for meeting rooms and guest rooms, hot water, exterior lighting, pumps, and two new electric vehicle charging stations.
Each panel generates 500 watts.
The system is linked to B.C. Hydro's net metering system.
The metering program allows people to produce their own renewable energy, and use it for their home or business, while also having the option to connect to the B.C. Hydro grid if needed.
Harbourside Cohousing residents achieved success in financing the project through a voluntary contribution program, as there were no funds accessible from government sources.
The project cost $120,000.
"The decision to proceed with this solar project was based on research into the technology, a need for inflation protection from future rising energy costs, and to support the transition from fossil fuels to a renewable energy economy," said William Wallace, a Harbourside Cohousing spokesman.
