Tomorrow's Fleet
The 10-year program to retire, rebuild and
purchase locomotives will see CP Rail reshape its motive power fleet to satisfy its transportation needs for the foreseeable
future. This is how the fleet will be restructured:
- of the 354 first generation units now in service, 311 will be retired, 25 yard switchers will be rebuilt and retained
in yard service, 12 road switchers will be rebuilt for yard work and six units will be rebuilt for commuter
service;
- of the 450 second generation locomotives, 282 will be rebuilt and reassigned from general purpose service to yard
service, 92 will be rebuilt to current road service standards, 76 higher horsepower units will be modified from diesel
road freight service to diesel road switcher service for local freight and road switcher assignments;
- the 478 third generation units will be maintained in road service;
- 158 new road locomotives will be purchased, comprising 101 3,000-hp six-axle units and 57
2,000-hp four-axle units. ( See Table 2 )
