"Buck" Crump
Norris Roy Crump C.C., M.E., D.Eng., D.Sc., LL.D., D.C.L.
Buck Crump was literally born into the Canadian Pacific Railway at Revelstoke, British Columbia, on
30 Jul 1904. His father was former Superintendent of the Canadian Pacific Kettle Valley Division.
His formal career with the CPR began on 24 Jun 1920 and ended on 31 Dec 1974. During this
54 year period he started as an apprentice machinist, graduated with an advanced degree in mechanical engineering, and
eventually reached the level of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company.
Subsequent to his very distinguished career with one of Canada's major companies, Buck Crump retired to Calgary but
remained on the board of directors.
He was a staunch federalist, urging a greater sense of national unity despite his view that the country would never
become truly bilingual. He saw Canadian Pacific as "the greatest example of repatriation of ownership and control
in Canada".
During the 30 years that he served in the upper echelons of management, he received 7 honourary degrees and was a
director of numerous companies and charitable foundations. He was a governor of the Canadian Association for Latin
America and a life governor of the Montreal General Hospital. He was named a companion to the Order of Canada in 1972.
He left a wife, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
He died on 26 Dec 1989 at age 85.
