To protect the communities from coal dust blowing off the trains the loads are sprayed with a water and latex mixture upon departure from mines in the East Kootenays. The Notch Hill coal sprayer, located about halfway between the mines and Roberts Bank, coats the loads a second time to ensure dust control.
