A view of the Winnipeg machine shop shows multiple lathes driven by leather belts that are turned by large pulleys on rotating shafts running along the roof rafters. The shafts are rotated at one end by a larger belt connected to a steam engine. This would be a dangerous shop to work in with all the rotating belts and exposed gears driving various machines - 1884 William McFarlane Notman - McCord Museum VIEW-1434.1
Another area of the machine shop with the machines power shaft attached to the rafters in the center of the photo. Several steam locomotive side rods are laid on a bench to the right with the whole area filled with various metal shaping machines - 1884 William McFarlane Notman - McCord Museum VIEW-1586.1 |
