Over the course of Canadian railway history there have been numerous strikes imposed by unions against various railway companies beginning as early as 29 Dec 1876 on the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada.

The article explains the dispute over the employment of firemen on diesel locomotives which culminated in two strikes involving the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen on the Canadian Pacific Railway. It describes this complex problem caused by technological change in a continent-wide economic setting, and the resulting decision of the "Report of the Royal Commission on employment of Firemen on Diesel Locomotives in Freight and Yard Service on the Canadian Pacific Railway" in regards to the future of locomotive firemen across North America.
