CORRECTIONS TO CPR STEAM LOCOMOTIVE ASSIGNMENTS, 31 DECEMBER 1952. FROM OMER LAVALLEE'S BOOK "CANADIAN PACIFIC STEAM LOCOMOTIVES"

POSITIVE ERRORS AND CORRECTIONS

597 - not on lists but assigned to Alyth
898 - assigned to Lethbridge at this time.
939 - assigned to Lethbridge, not London.
945 - assigned to Sutherland at this time.
982 - Not Revelstoke. Was scrapped in 1948.
988 - Not Sicamous, more likely at Souris.
1026 - assigned to Lethbridge at this time.

All of the following shown as being at Kerrobert, Sask. Were actually assigned to Kentville, NS - 1015, 1018, 1038, 1050, 1079, 1090, 1092, 1101.

1074 - not Empress, likely should be Farnham.
1105 - not Fernie, should be Farnham.
1216 - assigned to Winnipeg at this time.
2613 - definately not Sortin, likely Coronation.
2709 - assigned to Coquitlam at this time.
3446 - assigned to Nelson at this time, not "ME"
3696 - not Sutherland, likely should be Sudbury.

The following shown as being at Wetaskewin are suspect as it was a turn-around point for crews on the Wetaskewin Sub. who's home terminal was Hardisty. All that was definately assigned at Wetaskewin were one or two D10's that were in helper service over the Gwynne hill between Wetaskewin and Camrose. Probably the 1019 was there. The 2923 was on passenger between Swift Current and Empress, Alta. at that time. The 5122, 5165, 5203, 5204, and 5227 all probably saw service on the Wetaskewin Sub., but would have been assigned either at Edmonton or Hardisty.

PROBABLE ERRORS

1206 - shown as "BN" (Brandon). Doubtful, likely should have been "CN" (Coronation)
5223 - shown Vancouver but highly unlikely. If so it would have been the only coal fired P1n in B.C. although it was in service in Kootenay and Kettle Valley before this. I saw it at Saskatoon in the summer of 1952 and it went to Montreal from there.
2330 - had been at Alyth in 1951 - 1952, but was likely enroute back to Toronto by Dec. 1952.
3678 - very unlikely at Angus, more likely at Ogden if being shopped. Actually it was assigned to Penticton at this time.
3626 and 3723 - both shown as assigned to Tadanac (Trail), B.C. Probably were there on the date Omer did up the lists from, in local freight or helper service between there and Rossland. But Nelson was the assignment station for road power in this area. Only the 0-8-0s shown there would actually be assigned to Tadanac. The 3626 was Nelson assigned and the 3723 was actually Cranbrook assigned, but must have been used west of Nelson due to a power shortage.
5323 - Had been a pusher at Field. Was enroute to either Ontario or Quebec at this time.
5327 - Still in B.C., assigned either to Coquitlam or Kamloops.
5374 - Shown as Weyburn, Sask. likely should be Winnipeg
5470 - Shown as Weyburn likely should be Winnipeg.
6247 - Shown with a "?" should not be on the list. Scrapped before December 31st. Had been at Fort MacLeod, Alta. before scrapping.

Assignments for engines shown as at Ogden under repair-
441 - Brandon
442 - Brandon
961 - Alberta District
1013 - Alberta District
1283 - Alyth
2444 - Moose Jaw
2705 - Coquitlam
3499 - Actually assigned to Ogden as the shop switcher.
5128 - Manitoba District
5914 - Alyth
5930 - Alyth

Assignments for engines shown as at Weston under repair.
863 - Sutherland, Sask.
1078 - Saskatchewan District.
1211 - Saskatchewan District
2331 - Swift Current, Sask.
2353 - Moose Jaw
2438 - Moose Jaw
2713 - Brandon
5340 - Winnipeg, Kenora, or Fort William
5347 - " " " " "
5451 - " " " " "
5790 - Manitoba District, likely Winnipeg
6943 - Moose Jaw.

No doubt there are errors in the lists regarding eastern Canadian assignments, but my eastern assingment lists are not as comprehensive as my western lists.

This is not intended to belittle Omer Lavallee's excellent book on C.P.R. steam locomotives. I offer it only to update his lists, and the above list contains no information that I am not certain of, or find much more probable than what the original list showed.

SUPPLEMENT TO C.P.R. LIST OF OIL BURNERS AS COMPILED BY O. LAVALLEE

ERRORS, OMISSIONS, AND ITEMS OF INTEREST

241 - Probably was oil in mid-1930s as it operated on Vanc. Island with 240 and 242.
586 - Convered back to burn coal again in the early 1940's
963 - Can find no evidence to indicate it was converted to burn oil
965 - Same comment as for 963, very doubtful.
2355- Omitted
2363- "
2364- "
2373- "
2853- "
2910- "
3499- Converted to oil in 1951 or 1952 when it came to Calgary as the Ogden shop switcher.
3601- Should show as converted in 1952 and 1956.
3623- Shown in error. Dates shown in list are after it's conversion to a Mikado.
3629- As above for 3601.
3630- Omitted.
3730- Converted a few months before being scrapped.

There could be more, but I think this covers it pretty well.
