WINNIPEG - "The old lady who has been sitting in front of the CPR station for
the last 24 years is losing her shape", said a special story in the daily Tribune here, based on Canadian
Pacific's veteran locomotive "Countess of Dufferin".
"The Countess is at least 94-years-old. After working for the Northern Pacific
Railway for five years, she was brought to Winnipeg in 1877, on a barge which was towed up the Red River from
St. Paul, Minnesota. In a letter to Winnipeg's Mayor Stephen Juba, the Vice-President of the CPR's Prairie
Region, D.M. Dunlop, warned the city, which owns the Countess, that she is about ready for the scrap
heap."
