Tree Planting Car On Its
Twenty-Ninth Prairie Tour
Before
setting out on its 29th tour of the prairies, the Canadian Forestry Association's
tree planting car received a complete internal overhauling and a new coat of paint
at Weston shops in Winnipeg. Later, officials of the railway and the association
gathered on the car to inspect its face-lifting. Shown here at the
ceremony in the Winnipeg depot are (l to r): H. Chester, John Coats, Murray
Pratt, H.A. Greeniaus, H. Arkle, Alan Beavan, F. Trimble, W.F. Tully, C.E. Hayles,
W. Manson, C.A.E. Hensley, John Richardson, J.R. Almey, N.R. DesBrisay, J.L.
Sugden.
After a complete overhauling at Weston shops, the Canadian
Forestry Association's tree planting car was returned to the association by the
CPR in an official ceremony recently at the Company's depot in Winnipeg. Shortly
afterwards the travelling classroom left on its 29th tour of the prairies to
instruct farmers in the latest techniques of soil conservation.
Speaking for the association, C.E. Hayles, Winnipeg, newly appointed national
president, said that the chief asset of the car was that it took the message and
knowledge of shelter belt planting right to the farmer in his own community. He
reported that since the car went into operation 28 years ago it has travelled
65,000 miles across the prairies and had an attendance of more than two million
persons.
"Since the car started on the road about 250 million trees have been planted
on the prairies", Mr. Hayles said. "About half of the prairie farmers
have planted some trees and about 25 percent of them have good belts".
Coloured sound films on the work of the association in the west were shown in the
car's classroom by Alan Beaven, manager of the prairie provinces division.
A number of railway officials headed by William Manson,
vice-president of the Company's prairie region, attended the
occasion. John Richardson and C.A.E. Hensley, directors of the association, were
also present.
