General Manager Opens New Station
at Farnham, P.Q.
Mayor and Businessmen Attend Ceremonies
Along with Former Farnham Railroaders
Farnham an historic railway town, where
many Canadian railway executives started their careers, has a new station. The
modern brick and reinforced concrete structure, housing station facilities and
divisional offices for the Company was officially opened by G.N. Curley, of
Toronto, general manager of the eastern region, in the presence of Mayor A.
Bernier of Farnham and a large group of citizens.
G.N.
Curley, general manager of the eastern region, and F.A. Pouliot, general
superintendent of the Quebec district, played host to these veteran railwaymen
at the official opening ceremonies of the Farnham, Que., station. Left to
right: Mr. Pouliot, A. Williams retired superintendent of the Farnham and
Smith Falls division, J.K. Savage former general superintendent of the Quebec
district, S.J. Hungerford who later became chairman and president of Canadian
National Railways, Mr. Curley, and J.J. Morgan retired Farnham
despatcher.
In his brief address Mr. Curley expressed appreciation for the
"patience" with which Farnham businessmen and citizens had accepted
temporary station facilities in the period since the old station was burned to
the ground. He presented to Mayor Bernier a key especially engraved to
commemorate the occasion.
The gathering was also addressed by F.A. Pouliot of Montreal, general
superintendent of the Quebec district and by Mayor Bernier. L.R. Bangs, of
Farnham, superintendent of the Farnham division, introduced the speakers.
Mr. Curley recalled in his address that he had spent most of his first 15 years
of railroading in Farnham and was superintendent of the division when he moved
away. Mr. Pouliot also began his career at Farnham and worked there 26 years as
a despatcher.
The new station, built at a cost of $160,000 includes on its ground floor a
spacious and comfortable waiting room, with leather-upholstered
chairs replacing the wooden benches of older stations, a baggage room, a ticket
booth, wash rooms, and telegraph office.
The second floor contains administrative offices of the Farnham division from
which are controlled the train operations between Montreal and Megantic, Que.,
on the line to Saint John, N.B., and between Montreal and Wells River, Vt., on
the line to Boston. The Montreal-Wells River run was the first of
the Company's operations to be dieselized.
Long recognized as a training ground for top-notch railwaymen, the
Farnham office once housed at the same time, it was recalled, Mr. S.J.
Hungerford, who later became chairman and president of the Canadian National
Railways, Grant hall, later to move up to be vice-president of the
Canadian Pacific, J.P. Johnston, who became a regional
vice-president of the C.N.R., J.J. Scully, former general manager
of Canadian Pacific eastern lines, J.K. Savage, former general superintendent
of the Quebec district, and J.J. Connolly, who became a railway operating
executive in the United States.
Among guests invited to attend the ceremony from Montreal were Mr. Hungerford
and Mr. Savage of the above group, A. Williams, former superintendent of the
Farnham division, and J.J. Morgan, retired despatcher.
The Mayor
of Farnham, Quebec, A. Bernier (center), was the first person to purchase a
ticket at the new station. Looking on are G.N. Curley (left), of Toronto,
general manager of the eastern region, and F.A. Pouliot, general superintendent
of the Quebec district.
