Mayfair Terminal: at Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Image Coquitlam B.C. - CP Rail's new $5.5 million Mayfair terminal for the handling of highway trailers and containers has been officially opened.

Situated on 26 acres of land in the Mayfair Industrial Park, the new terminal is more than double the size of the old False Creek facility in Vancouver.

"The new terminal will enable us to handle increased traffic and provide capacity for projected future expansion, especially in the rapidly developing area of domestic containerization," said J.B. Allen, regional manager for intermodal services.

The terminal may handle more than 10,000 import/export containers, 5,000 domestic containers, and some 20,000 highway trailers this year.

With a total capacity for about 150 rail cars, the site features nine service tracks, four with paved ramps for rapid loading and unloading of trailers.

Also included are office and service buildings and a 60 ton capacity truck scale, at a total cost of $300,000. On-site equipment includes two top-lift container handling machines worth some $700,000.

Gold hat: Wearing a safety cap saved Carman Elvin Viers from a serious injury at Revelstoke, B.C. recently. A draw bar sling slipped from the deck of a crane, caught his ankle, and threw him from the crane deck, plummeting some 12 feet, head first. Above, Mr. Viers is surrounded by fellow carmen after receiving his new hat.
