Archives Seeks to Identify Engine
Collection of C.A. Barrett.
The Corporate Archives has asked readers of CP Rail News for assistance in identifying the subject of the above
photograph.
Taken at Ogden Shops, Calgary, Alberta, on 15 Jul 1937, it portrays a six-wheeled gas (or
diesel) mechanical switch engine, lettered C.P.R. The style of lettering, which was obsolete by 1937, suggests that
it may have belonged to one of the mines owned by the former Department of Natural Resources of Canadian Pacific.
Communications should be addressed to the Corporate Archives, Canadian Pacific, P.O. Box 6042, Montreal,
H3C 3E4.
Yeats' Last Run: When Locomotive Engineer Floyd Yeats (center) made
his last run aboard The Canadian, his brother Bill (right), also a company engineman, acted as fireman for the trip,
while his son Trevor went along for the ride.
Snowshed: The tail end of a westbound freight passes through a newer
section of the Laurie Snowsheds in the Selkirk Mountains. The new open face, cantilever construction, flanked by a
pillared section to the left and the old timber-supported sheds to the right, was developed by CP Rail
engineers to counter the steep dip in the rock that prevented installation of adequate support beams. Located est of
Revelstoke, this three-quarter-mile long portion of the mainline negotiates a series of steep avalanche
slopes.
