On Vinyl: Comments of CP Rail employees and the song "Steel Wheel" are featured on the new "45"
recently distributed to employees and a few customers.
Whether "Steel Wheel" makes the nation's top 40 or not remains to be seen but the theme song for CP Rail's
radio ad campaign and comments from employees across Canada are featured on a new record distributed to employees and selected
customers recently.
The 45 RPM record, produced in stereo, is part of the railway's National Communications Program which began in June with the
airing of a series of radio commercials about the CP railwaymen and women, the work they do and the company they work for.
"The record was produced as a tribute to all employees who work on the railway," said K.F. Key, director of
advertising for Canadian Pacific. "Some of the comments will be recognized from the commercials being aired but others have
never been heard before."
The comments of 27 employees can be heard on the recording which is produced in French on the flip-side under the title
"Grands Horizons."
The thrust of the communications program is to enhance CP Rail's reputation and public image as a modern, innovative,
progressive, and cost-efficient transporter of import/export and domestic goods.
Mr. Key reiterated that the key to the advertising and its credibility is the railwaymen and women who work for CP Rail.
During the week of 11 Sep 1983, advertisements began appearing in various newspapers and publications across the country as
part of the print advertising campaign. The ads feature employees and officers explaining how CP Rail is helping Canada move
forward, the theme of the communications program.
The first of the ads, which are also being posted on bulletin boards across the system, features R.S. Allison, executive
vice-president of CP Rail.
