Three
Bridges Under Construction on B.C. Windermere
Subdivision Morrie Zaitlin
Working "under
traffic": Construction crews continue work on the substructure and
abutments for a railway bridge north of Windermere "under
traffic" as a 111-car unit coal train rolls overhead.
Temporary pier supports hold up the track allowing work to be carried out
without disrupting rail traffic. Three railway bridges between Windermere
and Radium are being replaced this year at a cost of $1.9
million.
Radium, B.C. - As the snowline begins
its descent from higher elevations in the southeastern Kootenays, CP Rail
and contractors' crews are bustling to complete construction of three
bridges on the railway's Windermere subdivision near here.
Total value for the three projects is $1.9 million.
The Windermere subdivision is a key 229 kilometre (142 mile) section of
trackage running north south, linking the southeast Kootenay area with CP
Rail's main line at Golden. Trains carrying export coal, lead, zinc, and
forest products make their way along this route.
The work to replace a 18-metre (60-foot) pile
trestle with two 10-metre (33-foot) steel spans
over a portion of the winding Columbia River about 13 kilometres (eight
miles) south of Radium began in June.
The second bridge project is less than a kilometre further north along
the line. Work started in late August to replace a 36-metre
(119-foot) pile trestle with three 13-metre
(43-foot) steel spans over the Columbia River.
UNDER TRAFFIC
The two projects spanning the Columbia Rive are being completed
"under traffic", meaning that the new bridges are being built
on top of the existing trestles using temporary "bents" or
support pier structures to hold up the track while work is carried out,
permitting rail traffic to continue without disruption.
