VIA Rail Introduces New Locomotive
Based on proven
track records with Amtrak (the U.S. National Passenger Rail Corporation) and Ontarios's GO Transit, VIA Rail Canada
has introduced a new 3,000-hp locomotive.
Able to operate at speeds up to 145 km/h, the new locomotives are compatible with both VIA conventional and LRC
equipment. Although they are destined for use on the eastern and western transcontinental runs, the new units can
also be used in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor.
The new locomotives, assembled at the General Motors diesel plant in London, Ontario, will gradually replace existing
30-year-old units. Cost per unit is approximately $2.6 million, including spare parts, testing, and
other related expenses.
Constables of CPR's department of investigation, created in 1913,
sport their new uniforms.
A lumber train is seen crossing the Columbia River near Revelstoke,
British Columbia. By developing new transportation systems, CP Rail is helping Canada's lumber exports remain
competitive in light of outside market pressures.
