Grain Shipments - A Record Breaking Year By George Smellie
Winnipeg Manitoba - CP Rail shipped more grain during November 1987 than
in any other November in its history. It was the seventh time this year that the former record for a month was
toppled.
Nearly 1.9 million tonnes of the six major grains were unloaded from cars delivered by CP Rail in November - close
to the all-time record of just over two million tonnes for one month, set in May 1987, and repeated in
June 1987.
Breaking records for the month was the rule for the railway in 1987. It happened each month from January to June
inclusive, as well as in November.
Nearly 17 million tonnes were delivered by CP Rail in the first 11 months of 1987. That is just shy of the 17.19
million tonnes the railway delivered during the full twelve months of 1982 - the previous record for a calendar year.
CP Rail regards the record performance as a tribute to a team effort by the whole grain industry - producers,
handlers, sellers, and transporters alike.
The six major grains are wheat, oats, barley, flax, canola, and rye. They represent 95 percent of all grains and
oilseeds carried by the railway.
