SD40Fs
Canadian Pacific Railway
General Motors Electro-Motive Division SD40F commonly known as a "Red
Barn". CP Rail will take delivery of 25 new
main line locomotives between September and December 1988, from the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd.
The new six-axle locomotives, which were ordered last year at a cost of approximately $50 million, are
of the SD40F type which means they are special duty, 3,000-horsepower units with a
three-metre body width. They are scheduled for use mainly in Western Canada.
MODERN
The new units are required to upgrade hauling capacity and will be used primarily on long haul, bulk commodity
trains.
"The units will have a modern configuration featuring a full width carbody with interior walkways,
state-of-the-art cab design and instrumentation including a newly designed control console", said
R.S. Allison, president, CP Rail.
"The SD40Fs will also incorporate Positive Traction Control designed to maximize the application of power to
traction motors, thereby increasing haulage capability by 15 percent".
