Final Span at Harrison River
New Canadian Pacific Railway bridge at Harrison Mills, British
Columbia.
Harrison Mills, British Columbia - The final span was lowered into
place on the Harrison River bridge at the end of March 1988, completing a $6-million bridge replacement
project begun in 1986.
"The last span went in without any problems", said Division Engineer Brian O'Rourke. "We replaced 10
spans over the last year and a half using the gantry devised by Canron Inc., the contractor".
The gantry allowed a flexible construction schedule. During an 11-hour track closure, the crane lifted
the old span out, placed it on a rail car, and lowered the new span in.
The gantry has six support legs which stand directly on the bridge piers. When the new span was in place, it was
then moved to the next location on rail cars.
