Locomotive 7305
A group of 10 four-axle, 2,000-h.p. locomotives stands out from the fleet
of 205 CPRS GP38/GP38-2 units, the surviving 10 of 12 GP38-2 locomotives that came with the January 1991 acquisition of the Delaware
& Hudson Railway.
GP38-2, CP 7305, was the first of the fleet that came with the D&H to be painted in the new CPRS livery.
Bought by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company (LV) in 1972, CP 7305 originally was painted in LV's tuscan red livery and numbered 318.
With the formation of the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) in 1976, the D&H acquired 12 Lehigh Valley GP38-2 locomotives,
LV 318 among them. The D&H added a "7" in front of the Lehigh Valley number and the locomotive became DH 7318.
The locomotive was repainted in D&H's "austerity" blue and yellow paint scheme. After the Guilford Transportation
Industry's takeover of the D&H in January 1984, the locomotive was renumbered DH 224. In October 1992, the locomotive was renumbered
DH 7305. After a more than $500,000 overhaul (including overhead), the locomotive rolled out of Ogden Shops, in Calgary, Alberta,
31 Aug 1994, in its current CPRS livery as CP 7305.
Two of the original 12 LV locomotives, DH 227 and 7316, were involved in a wreck and were sold for scrap in 1992. Four of the remaining
10 ex-LV GP38-2 locomotives have been overhauled at Ogden Shops. Two, DH 7303 and 7304, were done before the new livery was developed
and received the classic D&H two-tone blue and gray with yellow "lightning-stripe" paint scheme in 1992. The other two, CP
7305 and 7311, were overhauled in 1994 and were painted in CPRS livery.
The overhaul included applying "Smart-Start" and a Reset Vigilance System (commonly called the "black box"), plus
giving the locomotive a cab upgrade, making it an international leader.
CP 7305 hauls CPRS display cars, CP 80 and 81, at the head end of Tioga Central's
excursion train, between Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, and Corning, New York, USA - 29 Oct 1995.
