CP Rail System Enters
Cyberspace with Launch of Web Site
On 1 Mar 1996 CP Rail System
entered cyberspace with the launch of a home page on the World Wide Web that gives
Internet users access to a wide range of information about the railway.
The home page, at http://www.cprailway.com, is divided into several categories,
including news releases, speeches, public policy briefs, annual reports, historical
data, and information on railway equipment. As well, the web site includes a railway
photo gallery, fast facts, and a special section for children.
"The railway's venture into cyberspace demonstrates our commitment to
information technology and communication. The CPRS home page gives us access to a
wider, more diverse audience", said Ken Key, director, advertising and public
relations, commercial.
The Internet provides CP Rail System with a low-costmethod of enhancing
communications with customers, suppliers, government officials, and other audiences.
The railway is exploring other opportunities to develop electronic links with the
marketplace, including an Internet-based information system that would
allow customers to trace shipments, make financial transactions, and communicate
directly with service representatives.
"The launch of our web site is just the beginning of an exciting new venture in
communications technology. The Internet offers countless opportunities to reach the
marketplace and communicate globally." It virtually opens our doors to the
world", Key said.
In addition to information about CP Rail System, visitors to its web site will find
links to transportation, government, financial, news media, and educational resources.
A recent survey by Andersen Consulting shows that a growing number of businesses see
the information highway as a vital means of communication.
There now are about four million commercial hosts, and more than 40 million people
have direct access to the Internet or are connected to other networks with links to
the Internet.
