RAILWAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO
VICTORIA CROSS RECIPIENT
The 89-year-old Vancouver
resident was accompanied by pipers and a colour guard from the Seaforth Highlanders
when he unveiled his name on the 1950s passenger coach at the West Coast Express
Waterfornt station in Vancouver
CPR honoured Canada's last surviving
Victoria Cross recipient recently when it renamed a vintage passenger car after
Second World War hero Ernest "Smoky" Smith.
Car number CP 102, previously named the Laurentian, will now bear the
name of Ernest "Smoky" Smith, VC. Inside the
80-seat passenger car, interpretive plaques will tell the story of Mr.
Smith and his regiment.
Mr. Smith earned his VC while serving with the Seaforth Highlanders in Italy in 1944.
As the Canadians tried to establish a bridgehead over the Savio River, Private Smith
came under heavy attack from three German tanks and 10 soldiers. He singlehandedly
fought off repeated enemy advances while protecting a wounded comrade, holding his
position until the rest of his troop arrived.
"We believe we have found a unique and enduring way to honour this true Canadian
hero", said Neal Foot, CPR's senior vice-president of operations.
"This CPR passenger car bearing Smoky Smith's name will cross the country for
years to come, sharing his extraordinary tale of bravery and determination".
The Ernest "Smoky" Smith, VC will be used for excursions on
CPR's network in Canada and the U.s.
