CPR's Fertilizer Market
Potash train moves to
Vancouver and offshore markets. CPR's fertilizer traffic consists primarily of potash and
chemical fertilizers. Our potash traffic moves mainly from Saskatchewan to markets in the U.S. and to offshore
markets through the ports of Vancouver, B.C., and Portland, Oregon. Chemical fertilizers are transported to markets
in Canada and the northern half of the U.S. western region from key production areas in the Canadian prairie
provinces. Phosphate fertilizer is also transported from U.S. and Canadian producers to markets in Canada and the
northern U.S.
CPR provides transportation services from all major potash and nitrogen production facilities in western Canada, and
has the most efficient routes from Canadian production areas to major U.S. markets. We also have direct service to
key barge facilities on the Mississippi River system at Minneapolis-St. Paul and the Louisville,
Kentucky, region, as well as access to Great Lakes vessels at Thunder Bay.
