Freight Train Derails
Near Regina
Regina - A collision between a freight train and a
semi-trailer truck sent as many as 20 rail cars hurtling off the tracks just east of
Regina Tuesday.
The derailment occurred shortly after 11 a.m. local time at a level crossing on Highway 46 near the
town of Balgonie, 20 kilometres east of Regina.
After the truck was dragged along the track, its driver was rushed to hospital with unspecified
injuries.
RCMP Cpl. Brian Jones suggested that bad weather, including slick roads after a heavy overnight
snowfall, may have contributed to the accident.
"Road conditions were wet and sloppy and it's foggy," he said.
Neither vehicle was transporting hazardous goods, Jones said.
The Canadian Pacific train was westbound with 93 cars in total, said Ed Greenberg, a company
spokesperson.
No other details were immediately available.
