Shortcut to Add Four Canadian Pacific Trains Locally
Elkhart Indiana USA - Train traffic through Elkhart edged up a bit last week
with the start Wednesday of an alternate route for some Canadian Pacific Railway trains between Detroit and Chicago.
With completion of a track at Butler connecting a Norfolk Southern line south out of Detroit to the east-west Norfolk
Southern line through Elkhart, Canadian Pacific trains began using it as a shortcut between the Windy City and Motor City. The
two railroads agreed in 2004 to cooperate in use of tracks, freight and yard services in some areas of the country, including
Elkhart.
The new Canadian Pacific routing through Elkhart eventually will add four trains a day, each way, to the local line, according to
Laura Baenen, Midwest communication manager for Canadian Pacific Railway. For now, one Canadian Pacific train per day each way is
dispatched over the Norfolk Southern line across northern Indiana.
Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canadian Pacific Railway provides freight transportation services over a 14,000-mile
network in Canada and the United States.
