Bridge to Somewhere

Canadian Pacific employees, repairing a bridge in Oshawa that has
been closed since summer 2004, say it should re-open next month.

Oshawa - A bridge in central Oshawa that has been closed to traffic for more than a year
will soon be back in service. And this time, it looks like they mean it.
Last February, we reported the bridge, which is on Albert St., between Olive Ave. and Albany St., had been closed due to
"structural concerns," but an Oshawa official figured it would re-open by May.
The bridge is owned by CP Rail and allows traffic to cross over railway tracks. Since it's part of Oshawa, repair work must be in
conjunction with the city.
Its closure has annoyed area residents and drivers who would have used Albert as a north-south route and now must go west
to Simcoe St. or east to Ritson Rd. to cross the tracks.
After hearing repairs were long overdue, we looked yesterday and found three CP employees working on structural reinforcements. They
said work should be done by the end of the month, but it could be well into December before the bridge re-opens to traffic.
We called Mike Sims, Oshawa's director of engineering, to confirm the date, but we were unable to reach him.
