Derail Lengthy Trains: Town
Petawawa - Slow-moving endless freight trains impeding emergency vehicles have prompted
town council to petition the federal transport department to cut them in half. Trains up to 130 cars in length can block four of the
town's eight crossings at any one time. In two separate incidents last summer, fire trucks were delayed by trains for 15 minutes in
trying to reach calls on the other side of the tracks. As a matter of safety, said Mayor Bob Sweet, trains should be limited to 70
cars until mainline improvements are complete and they can pick up speed.
