Sound of Silence at Tracey Road
Cobourg - Residents near the Tracey road railway crossing will get to enjoy the Christmas
carol Silent Night in peace with the recent silencing of train whistle blowing at the crossing.
"I cannot guarantee it will be a 100 percent," says Councillor Bill MacDonald, public works co-ordinator. "I
want to remind people if there is fog, heavy snow, a small animal or a safety concern, they will occasionally blow their whistle."
Cobourg council passed its bylaw on Monday, 12 Dec 2005 to prohibit the blowing of train whistles at the crossing. The
area around the crossing has been appropriately secured from potential dangerous situations for pedestrians to meet Transport Canada's
concerns, notes Coun. MacDonald.
"Sufficient work has been done to seal off the road from potential hazards," adds Coun. MacDonald.
Councillor Lloyd Williams, current protection services co-ordinator and former public works co-ordinator,
recalls his three-year process to silence whistles in Cobourg near the George Street crossing and through Cobourg.
"It has been a long, long process but I think it has been completed," says Coun. Williams.
The Town implemented an anti-whistling bylaw in 2002 and both CN and CP railways issued "no whistle orders" in
late February of 2003 for Cobourg. The 2002 bylaw covered all crossings in Cobourg except the Tracey Road crossing.
