South Shore Line Shut Till at Least Monday
Montreal - Commuter train service between Montreal and the South Shore will be closed until
Monday and possibly longer, CPR spokesperson Michel Spenard said yesterday.
Canadian Pacific Railway and Surete du Quebec investigators are still trying to determine the cause of Friday afternoon's train
derailment, which blocked the railway bridge between LaSalle and the South Shore.
The bridge remains closed and will be until at least Monday, Spenard said.
With six cars of the original 93-car, three-engine train continuing to lean today at a 45-degree
angle, CPR workers are being cautious.
"There is a small risk the cars would fall, but we are working slowly and carefully," Spenard said.
"The containers on the train cars are pinned together. We do not know what could happen. They could possibly fall into the
river," he added.
A 400-tonne-capacity crane arrived yesterday afternoon from Gatineau to remove the containers.
Workers are expected to begin using the crane today.
About 1,100 South Shore passengers use the weekday train service daily, with service to Ste. Catherine, St. Constant, Delson, and
Candiac.
