New Home for Royal Rail Line

Calgary - Canadian Pacific Railway celebrated its 125th birthday in style yesterday, rolling out plans for some new luxury downtown digs.

CPR president Fred Green unveiled a computerized design for a new office building for the Royal Canadian Pacific, CPR's world-renowned luxury rail line, now in its sixth year.

Its headquarters will move to the corner of 9 Ave. and 1 St. S.W. from the basement of the Fairmont Palliser Hotel to house its marketing and operations staff.

The design of the 9,000-sq.-ft., two-storey building is derived from a steel trestle train bridge.

A large station clock will be situated on the corner of the intersection and railway artifacts will be embedded in sidewalk tiles as "public art".

The new building uses steel, glass and limestone, which will reflect the Palliser's historic look. The $3.5-million structure is scheduled to be completed by summer 2008.
