Serious Personal Injury Collision Involving a Pick-Up Truck and Freight Train
Sudbury - On the 4 Mar 2006 at approximately 8:20am emergency response units were
called to attend a collision that occurred east of Falconbridge Road on Lasalle Boulevard involving a Freight Train and a 1990 Chevrolet
Pick Up Truck.
Thirty-eight-yrs-old Pembroke male, Robert GAGNE, was approaching the well indicated but not controlled railway crossing on
the east end of Lasalle Blvd when he attempted to stop for a northbound train. His vehicle began to slide on the ice packed road and he
was able regain control stopping in the middle of the train tracks. Forty-eight-yrs-old engineer, Jim Dubois, was
approximately 250 yards from the crossing when he saw the truck approaching. He initiated an emergency stop but was unable to slow the
5,865-ton train in the short stopping distance and the two vehicles collided.
Mr. GAGNE was extricated from his vehicle and transported to St. Joseph Hospital where he is being treated for non-life
threatening injuries.
Police would like to remind the public to drive according to the road conditions making sure to slow down when coming to controlled or
uncontrolled railway crossing. A fully loaded Freight Train while traveling at the posted speed limit will take over one half of a
kilometer before coming to a complete stop.
