It's Not Even April But Heritage Group Preps for PoCo May Day
Port Coquitlam - Don't delay purchasing your tickets for All Aboard, It's May Day.
The Port Coquitlam Heritage Society's annual May Day tea sold out quickly last year and many people were turned away at the door, says
society spokesperson Wendy Sankey. The Heritage Society is highlighting trains in this year's May Day festivities and, more
specifically, the Canadian Pacific Railway's influence on Port Coquitlam.
Sankey and fellow heritage society member Karon Fuson will be dressed as a locomotive engineer and conductor to tell the stories of CPR
workers, and the company's presence at Westminster Junction, Coquitlam Yards and, later, Port Coquitlam.
Lavina Shaw, president of the International Telegraphers Club, will give demonstrations and a history of the telegraph presence in PoCo.
Tea-goers can also check out the CPR photographs and artwork from Grade 4 and 5 students from Mary Hill and Kilmer
elementary schools.
The May Day tea takes place 13 May 2006 at PoCo's Wilson Centre from 1 to 3 p.m.; tea, coffee, juice and goodies will be
served during the event. Tickets are on sale by calling Wendy Sankey at 604-464-7236 or Karon Fuson at
604-941-6517. Price is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and students. Seating is on a first-come,
first-served basis and doors open at 1 p.m.
As well, the Heritage Display Centre at 2571 Mary Hill Rd. will feature an extensive display of train memorabilia and photographs
during May Day week, 6-13 May 2006, including a scale model of the Royal Hudson from Carr's Locomotives; admission is
$1.
