Former Railway CEO Sinclair Dies at Age 92

Ian Sinclair, chief executive of the Canadian Pacific conglomerate from 1969 to 1981 and later a
senator, has died at age 92.
Born in Winnipeg and trained as a lawyer, he joined Canadian Pacific as an assistant solicitor in 1942, advancing to
vice-president and general counsel by 1960 and then to president and CEO, in 1972 adding the role of chairman of Canadian
Pacific Enterprises Ltd. which he held until 1984.
Sinclair, who during his time at the head of Canadian Pacific expressed public doubts about the propriety of corporate donations to
political parties, was appointed to the Senate in December 1983 by then-prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
He served on the boards of other corporations including the Royal Bank of Canada and Sun Life Assurance.
A member of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and father of four, grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of five,
Sinclair died at his home Friday.
