Helping to Make a Child's Wish Come True, Goal of Water Bottle Recycling Project by Alberta CPR Employees
A unique fundraiser by Canadian Pacific Railway employees in Alberta that involves recycling plastic
water bottles in support of the province's Children's Wish Foundation of Canada is proving to be a major success.
Since November, 2005, plastic water bottles have been recycled by the 1,600 CPR employees representing Field Operations, Engineering,
Mechanical Services and Administration at yard operations in Alberta with the money being raised for the charity. So far, approximately
70,000 water bottles have been turned in across the province, which has resulted in more than $7,000 being raised from the refunds and
other direct employee donations. All the funds are being distributed to the Foundation by CPR employees throughout Alberta.
Employees at Calgary's CPR Alyth Yard will present a $1,000 cheque to a Children Wish Foundation of Canada representative. The Calgary
presentation follows similar ceremonies at Medicine Hat and Lethbridge CPR yards.
"This employee-driven project for this important program has been a tremendous success and fits with CPR's commitment
to communities and the environment," said CPR Manager Operations, Calgary, Kevin Bishop, who estimated that more than 800,000
water bottles are used in the Alberta Service Area every year. "CPR workers from one end of the province to the other have been
energized by this grassroots' campaign, because they know a child is benefiting every time a plastic bottle is turned in at one of the
employee collection locations."
Bishop said the goal of the fundraiser by Alberta CPR employees is to raise enough money to grant at least one wish per year, so the
fundraising will continue throughout the year. Similar water bottle recycling programs in support of the Children's Wish Foundation of
Canada also have been started by CPR employees in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
