Railcar Treks Through Wheatland

The former Sidetrack Cafe railcar is placed onto a transport rig so that it can make the trek to Mossleigh, Alta. The car made a brief stop in Wheatland before continuing on its journey.

Strathmore - A railcar built in 1887 made it's way through Wheatland County last week.

From 10-14 Apr 2006 the railcar sat waiting to carry on to its new home at the Aspen Crossing Tree Farm and Garden Centre in Mossleigh.

Proud new owner of the rail car, Jason Thornhill, said he's "hoping to make a coffee shop out of it."

The car, which has been in Edmonton since 1991 as part of the Sidetrack Cafe, has been all over North America. Originally part of the Pacific Railway, the car, built by Pullman Car Manufacturers, became property of the Canadian government in the 1920's used by foreign dignitaries and even John Diefenbaker until 1975 when it was sold to an acreage.

Thornhill said he hopes to have his coffee shop open by summer.
