Gruesome Railway Accident
A Canadian Pacific Railway worker had his foot nearly severed by a train in a gruesome accident on
the Old Strathcona tracks late Tuesday.
EMS Supt. Rob Sharman said paramedics rushed to the scene at 11:53 p.m. and found a 48-year-old man suffering from the
serious wound to his foot.
It appeared the man was clipped and knocked over by the train, which then ran over his foot and partially amputated it, said Sharman.
He was taken to the University hospital. Initial reports said the worker also suffered a crushed pelvis.
CPR spokesman Ed Greenberg confirmed a CPR employee was struck by a slow-moving locomotive during a switching movement in
the rail yard.
CPR officials are now reviewing the incident to find out what happened and prevent future accidents from happening, he said.
Greenberg said CPR's injury rate is 2.1 injuries per 200,000 employee hours, a rate he says has improved by 40% since 2002.
