Grain Train Leaks Worry Bear Alliance
Wildlife conservationists are urging Canadian Pacific Railway to fix hopper cars that leak grain onto
the tracks to protect the province's threatened grizzly bear population.
Spring is a particularly high-risk time for grizzly bears because snow high in the mountains forces them to forage for
food in the valley bottoms, said Tracey Henderson, Grizzly Bear Alliance program director.
The concern is many bears are enticed onto the railway tracks by grain that spills from hopper cars, she said.
"That situation is as bad as ever right now," said Henderson.
