Passengers Back on Track
Passengers from a luxury train derailed in the Rockies were back on track today and will be offered
compensation for their inconvenience, says a company official.
No one was hurt when six cars on the Rocky Mountaineer jumped the tracks in B.C. between Golden and Revelstoke about noon Sunday - and
the 563 passengers and crew aboard were quickly bussed to Kamloops, said Graham Gilley of Vancouver-based Rocky Mountaineer
Vacations.
After spending the night, half of those got on another train to Vancouver while the others were bussed the rest of the way.
The scenic two-day Calgary-Westcoast train trips range in price from $650 to $1,400 and Gilley said some sort
of a refund or alternate travel will be offered, depending on each passenger's individual situation.
"We built our business one customer at a time and we will certainly treat them fairly," Gilley said, adding many who take the
trip are from overseas.
"We've had cases where there was maybe a slide in front of the train or some track-work being done and we've always
taken care of our guests to their satisfaction."
He said the company hasn't had any serious incidents in its 17 years in business.
The affected section of track, about 200 km west of Calgary, was reopened by this afternoon and the company and Canadian Pacific
Railway officials are still trying to determine the derailment's cause.
