All Aboard with Breakfast for Learning and CPR in Support of Child Nutrition
Canadian Pacific Railway and Breakfast for Learning (BFL) are
full steam ahead with the Empress Train Tour to help raise funds and awareness for school nutrition programs. The historic steam
locomotive will be visiting communities throughout British Columbia and Alberta from 29 Jul 2006 to
1 Aug 2006, helping to share BFL's vision to ensure every child in Canada attends school well nourished and ready to
learn.
Even in these summer months, it's important not to take a vacation from child nutrition. The CPR Empress will be promoting the
benefits of healthy eating and its positive link to learning. Studies demonstrate that kids who maintain nutritious diets have more
energy, longer attention spans and higher problem solving skills. But 31% of elementary school and 62% of secondary school students
do not eat breakfast daily.
"Back to school time can be hectic, so these summer months are a good time to start making child nutrition a priority and
building good eating habits," says Tim Kennish, Chair, Breakfast for Learning. "We want to ensure that kids are getting
the fuel necessary to concentrate and learn to the best of their abilities. Last year, the Empress Train Tour helped raise over
$20,000 for nutrition programs and we are thrilled to be able to work with CPR again. With their help, thousands of children will
be served healthy foods, ensuring they go to school ready to learn."
Built in 1930, the 2816 Empress is one of only a handful of restored and operating CPR steam locomotives in North America.
Passengers can board the train for any leg of the tour with ticket costs ranging from $35-$65 for a
one-way trip.
This marks CPR's fifth year in partnership with Breakfast for Learning, the leading national, non-profit organization
solely dedicated to supporting child nutrition. The organization supports over 375 programs in British Columbia and Alberta,
supplying nutritious meals and snacks to over 22,000 children in the region.
"CPR is pleased to be working with Breakfast for Learning, knowing we can help ensure children received healthy breakfasts,
lunches and snacks, so they can get the most out of their school day," said CPR Vice President, Paul Clark.
The CPR Empress will kick off the tour in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, traveling for four days to its final destination in
Calgary, Alberta.
