Fleeing Teen Killed by Moving Train
New Westminster British Columbia - Police identified a
15-year-old South Surrey youth - who attended Earl Marriott Secondary - the victim killed by a train early Monday morning
in New Westminster.
The name of the male teenager is not being released, out of respect for the grieving family, police say.
Investigators explained the boy crawled underneath the slow-moving train in order to evade police.
He was caught underneath the train and fatally wounded.
On Tuesday afternoon, one lone bouquet of flowers was perched in the chainlink fence close to where the youth died. The flowers were an
offering from the nearby Windsor Hotel and carried the message: "Wasted youths and broken hearts".
Police are still trying to locate two other teenagers who were with the victim minutes before he died. As well, they're asking any
witnesses to step forward.
Det. Const. Terry Wilson with the New Westminster Police said the incident began around 3:10 a.m. when police recieved a report of three
people damaging vehicles in the 800-block of Agnes Street. When NWPS officers arrived the suspects fled on foot in
different directions. Police followed the victim who ran downhill toward Front Street.
When the youth got to the railway tracks at Front and Begbie streets, a slow-moving eastbound train blocked his path. He
may have rolled under the train trying to escape police in pursuit, said Wilson.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in to lead the investigation because the suspect was the subject of a New
West police pursuit at the time of his death. Canadian National Rail police and the B.C. Coroners office are also assisting the
investigation.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact NWPS at 604-525-5411 or CrimeStoppers at
1-800-222-TIPS.
