Rogers Pass Pushers
Beaver Valley British Columbia - I understand the pushers
have been reinstated for a month while further repairs to Shaugnessy tunnel are carried out.
The Shaughnessy tunnel was originally partly lined with concrete, however it is now necessary to line more of it.
The Shaughnessy tunnel is about 1 mile long, and is one mile east of the longer MacDonald tunnel. Both are on the MacDonald track
which opened in 1988.
The MacDonald track provides a lesser westbound gradient of 1% (1 in a 100) versus the 2.2% (1 in 42) of the older Connaught track.
While the Shaughnessy tunnel is under repair, the westbound CP main line traffic must revert to the Connaught track, and using pusher
engines (helpers in Western US parlance, bankers in UK/Aus parlance) - Phil Mason.
