Children, Driver Injured in Bus-Truck Collision

Sgt. P.J. Mills of the RCMP Traffic Services looks inside the school bus that was involved in a crash with a Canadian Pacific Railway truck on Tuesday near Regina.

Grand Coulee Saskatchewan - Broken glass and backpacks remained inside a school bus that lay on its side in a ditch Tuesday morning after it collided with a five-ton truck.

The bus driver and a child were immediately transported to hospital following the collision with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. At the time of the collision, there were nine students, ranging in age from nine to 13, on the bus. It was headed to a school in Grand Coulee, Sask., roughly 13 kilometres west of Regina.

Sgt. Brad Kaeding, spokesperson for the RCMP, said the school bus was travelling southbound when it apparently failed to yield at a yield sign. A CPR work truck travelling west broadsided the bus.

The bus flipped on to its side in the ditch as a result of the collision while the truck rolled once.

Kaeding said the 55-year-old male bus driver was believed to be the most seriously injured and was transported to hospital in Regina by ambulance.

"I believe head injuries were mentioned although I'm not sure of the extent of those injuries. I don't believe they're life-threatening at this point but it's still pretty early to tell for sure", Kaeding told reporters at the site of the collision.

The remaining eight students were transported to hospital together in Regina and were treated for minor injuries including bumps and bruises.

No charges have been laid at this time. An RCMP collision reconstructionist is assisting in the investigation.

This is the third collision involving a school bus to occur in the province since the start of the school year.
