Noise Upsets Residents in Upscale Neighbourhood

Saskatoon Saskatchewan - Residents of one of the city's newest and most expensive east-end neighbourhoods say life in Briarwood is not so sweet.

Whether it's the constant noise from the city's snow dump or loud train whistles, unnatural night sounds have been driving people nuts, according to area resident Darryl Gerwing.

"If you have your windows open, you can get the train whistle two, three times a night," said Gerwing. "All hours of the night. It's really loud."

Every night since he moved into the neighbourhood three months ago, Gerwing said he's woken up due to what he calls the "excessive blowing" of train whistles.

Gerwing is asking for a "whistle cessation" for the railway crossing at Eighth Street and Zimmerman Road. It basically requires that any blowing of whistles not be done unless there is a danger. He says the City of Regina already has such a policy in place.

Gerwing has been in contact with Canadian Pacific Railway, city Coun. Tiffany Paulsen and the RM of Corman Park and feels confident his concerns will be addressed.

Some residents of the area have also found the Bobcat noise from a 24-hour snow dump near their homes has kept them up at night.

Due to their complaints, they say, the activity at night has since stopped and by the end of this week, the dump will be moved farther away, out of town.

When contacted Sunday afternoon, Paulsen confirmed that the Briarwood snow dump has been shut down.
