2010 Olympics Goes to Work on the Railroad with CP
If you are waiting at a railway crossing for a train to pass,
you might see the five interlocking rings of the Olympic Games come rumbling by.
The Vancouver organizing committee for the 2010 Winter Games and Canadian Pacific announced a sponsorship deal Wednesday worth about
$15 million in cash and services.
The freighting company is about to become a moving billboard for the 2010 Games as the logo will be emblazoned on the side of CP
railcars across Canada.
"You'll see it on the locomotive in pretty quick order," Canadian Pacific president and CEO Fred Green said at a news
conference.
CP will look after freighting needs for the Olympic Games by train and trucking.
The company and VANOC are also looking at how CP could transport people during the Games.
CP is also a designated supporter of the Canadian teams for the 2008, 2010, and 2012 Olympics in the six-year deal.
VANOC chief executive officer John Furlong has been pushing the Vancouver Olympics as "Canada's Games" and believes CP can
help spread that message by trains passing through 900 Canadian communities.
"The railway goes to places we could never go and having the brand and the rings go through and having the employees telling the
story again and again, we have great awareness across Canada today, but we need every Canadian to be aware of this and CP is the
right company to do it for us," Furlong said.
