Gatinieau Quebec - Two 20-year-old men were
injured, and one was in critical condition Monday morning, after a train smashed into the all-terrain vehicle they were
riding in Gatineau, Que., the day before.
The crash took place near Boulevard Lorrain around 3 p.m. ET as the red ATV was trying to cross the tracks, witness Joel Boisvert told
Radio-Canada.
The impact of the crash partially crushed the ATV and knocked the front left wheel of the vehicle perpendicular to the rear wheels.
Boisvert said the men were pinned under the front hook of the yellow locomotive and lost a lot of blood. They were sent to a hospital
in Hull.
Police said the passenger suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures, and the driver received minor injuries.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
A railway crossing with a barrier was recently put up for motor vehicles. But neighbours told Radio-Canada that the area
is also popular with ATV and snowmobiler users, and there is nothing to stop them from crossing the
tracks.
