Train Derails in Golden; Town on Alert

A train derailment in the town of Golden, B.C., west of Calgary,
is causing environmental concerns.

Golden British Columbia - Parts of Golden are on an
evacuation alert after five train cars, one containing hydrogen chloride, jumped the tracks and derailed in the town around 4 a.m. local
time.
Ed Greenberg from Canadian Pacific Rail, who was enroute to the crash site this morning, said he has been told that at least one school
has been closed and that part of Golden closest to the scene has been put on alert, but has not been evacuated.
Access into the site has also been hampering efforts, he said, but the scene is contained, and there is no immediate threat to the
environment, he said.
The train jumped the tracks in a densely wooded area that is not visible from the highway. "There is product on the ground," he
said, adding hydrogen chloride is used in everything from the textile industry to photography.
Emergency crews are still evaluating the threat to see how the spill can be kept from seeping into a nearby creek which feeds into the
Kicking Horse river, he said.
No injuries have been reported.
