CP Rail Expects to Open Closed Mainline Soon

Lytton British Columbia - Canadian Pacific Railway expects a section of its main line through British Columbia that was closed by a rockslide to be reopened by the end of the day on Friday, a spokesman said.

The railway has been able to re-route trains around the damaged track, but the incident has added to a traffic backlog at the port of Vancouver which has seen rail and road links hit by repeated weather woes in Western Canada this winter.

The CP track at Lytton, British Columbia, was hit by a slide caused by heavy rain storms that rolled through the province last weekend. The slide also damaged the Trans-Canada Highway, which may not reopen for several more days.

"The track restoration effort has gone well," CP spokesman Ed Greenberg said.

Canadian National Railway's line through the area of the Fraser Canyon was also closed by slides, but it was able to reopen earlier in the week. CN and CP share each other's lines through the canyon.

An official said the port of Vancouver hopes the reopening will allow it to finally begin reducing its traffic backlog.

"Mother nature bats last, but we hope we get some luck on our side for a while," said Scott Galloway, the port's director of trade development.
