Spiral Tunnels: One of Canada's Wonders
When I initially heard that the CBC was on a search for the
"Seven Wonders of Canada" of course Field and Yoho immediately came to mind. I hurriedly put together my nomination email and
sent it off. It read as follows: Allow me to introduce you to the "Wonder of Yoho". Within this breathtaking natural
wonder lies one of the world's most spectacular engineering marvels - the Spiral Tunnels.
Completed in 1908-1909, the tunnels were built to reduce the 4.5 percent grade on the "Big Hill" in the Kicking
Horse Pass near Field, to 2.2 percent. It was an undertaking of mammoth proportions in its day, utilizing very simple survey equipment
and thousands of man hours.
The Spiral Tunnels viewpoint (located approximately 19 kms. west of Lake Louise, Alberta) is one of the most visited viewpoints along
the Trans-Canada Highway. I believe that is a testament to an awe-inspiring feat our
fore-fathers achieved in the larger effort to bring our young country together a century ago.
I have a special connection to this magnificent place we call home as my husband John worked many long hours in these tunnels for 26
years before retiring in Field from the CP Railway in 2006.
We are surrounded by wonder and beauty in many forms here in Yoho and will seize any opportunity to share this special place with its
abundance of historical and cultural value with others.
The Spiral Tunnels made the short list of 52 nominees from more than 25,000 submissions. As have the Rocky Mountains and the
Trans-Canada Highway. The voting will continue until the end of May. You can vote for your favourite wonders at
CBC Seven Wonders.
