Grizzly Eating Deer When Hit by Train
A grizzly bear was feasting on a dead deer, not grain, before she
was killed by a train Monday in Banff National Park, Parks Canada says.
Her two cubs, left in the wild in the hopes they would survive, met with the same fate over the next two days. An autopsy to examine
the stomach contents of the one-year-old bears has not been completed.
Animals enticed to railway corridors by grain spilled from trains have long been a problem in Canada's flagship national park. But
while there were tiny traces of grain around the railway's rocks, Parks Canada doesn't suspect this contributed to the grizzly family's
death. Parks Canada generally removes dead elk and deer from near tracks to prevent such accidents, an official
said.
