Man Run Over by Freight Train

Crowsnest Pass Alberta - He went up against a freight train and lived, but a Calgary man who was run over on the tracks near Crowsnest Pass now has to answer to police.

Mounties launched an investigation after a man sustained non life-threatening injuries when he was run over by a train shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, between Coleman and Blairmore, said Sgt. Scott Howard.

"According to witnesses, a lone male was lying between the tracks on the main line," he said.

"Once the train came to a stop, the male was located under a grain car, conscious, and breathing."

Emergency personnel pulled the man from under the train and STARS flew him to Foothills hospital.

"The 28-year-old male... suffered head and leg injuries," said Howard.

The train crew saw the man on the tracks, but were unable to stop in time, said CP Rail spokeswoman Breanne Feigel.

"The crew did everything according to protocol and... attempted to stop the train prior to making contact with the individual," she said.

"We are grateful he didn't die because of his injuries. This highlights the increased need and awareness for public safety and the dangers of trespassing on railway property."

Coleman is about 175 km southwest of Calgary.

Police couldn't say what the man was doing on the tracks at the time of the incident, or if alcohol was a factor in the incident, but said an investigation is continuing.
